Czech death metal outfit Sněť return with their second full-length, V bažinách vědomí, following their 2021 debut LP, Mokvání v okovech, and two subsequent splits. Continuing to draw heavily from the band’s favoured early-’90s traditions, V bažinách vědomí sharpens Sněť’s old-school death metal identity through a more considered and refined approach, without blunting any of the visceral brutality that made their debut so well received.

Particular emphasis can be found in Natur, evoking an older sensibility whilst revealing Sněť’s whetted growth, while Nekončící koloběh snění a probouzení carries the grotesque groove and sense of physical decay that permeate the record. Against this oppressive atmosphere, the warmth and weight of the production give each instrument room to bite through, bringing Sněť’s development into sharper focus without sacrificing the mulch-like character of old-school death metal.

Primal, grotesque and sublimely sepulchral, there is a visceral precision to Sněť’s brutality that suggests a band becoming increasingly assured in its own skin.

Recorded at Prague’s Golden Hive Studio by the comparatively lighter hand of Amák Golden (Sunshine, Blank, Night, Woodootoys), V bažinách vědomí is subsequently dragged through the considerably heavier hands of Greg Wilkinson (Autopsy, Deathgrave, Brainoil, Shrinkwrap Killers, Leather Glove) at Earhammer Studios. The resulting production is dense but never suffocating, giving each instrument enough bite and definition to expose the precision Sněť have developed without washing away a trace of the rot. Beneath the deliberately monstrous exterior lies a record built around memorable riffing, violent shifts and chaotic passages, with little interest in ornamentation or pretense.

V bažinách vědomí confirms that Sněť are no longer simply promising purveyors of old-school death metal; they are becoming one of its more compelling modern practitioners. The riffs hit, the grooves stick, the atmosphere lingers, and beneath it all is a band clearly growing more confident in its own identity. If this is Sněť hitting their stride, the underground should be paying attention.
