Saor’s Andy Marshall brings out his lesser known project, Fuath, for a special Sunday in Glasgow.
It’s rather naughty to be out until all hours on the first school night of the week, but it seems worth it on this occasion. It’s not very often that Fuath roll out. In fact, I don’t think we’ve ever seen them live before. When the opportunity arose, and it lined up with a free night, it felt like it would be rude not to attend. After an excessive period on public transport, and a quick stop at the Solid Rock, we hit Audio for a triple hit of the bleak stuff.
First band, Manchester’s Oakenthrone, are unfortunately down a bassist due to personal issues. Yet, they still give it their mournful best. A difficult task, which does seem to have thrown them a little off course by their second track, as the gods of tech issues align against them, too. Still, they make it work, bringing a suitably sweeping misery to kick things off. Respect is due for soldiering on in the face of adversity, but its’ effects can be felt. It would be great to catch them at full force.

Things are noticeably easier for Winter Eternal, whose thrashier style slams on to stage with immediate impact. From Athens, Greece, Soulreaper‘s solo outfit takes the evening’s proceedings up a notch in speed, while maintaining the morbidity with tracks like Palace of Despair and (the somewhat slower) Two Heavens As One. And yet certain people (AVZD…) called them “too happy” for a black metal gig on the sabbath. Yes, they do lean less to the sombre atmospheric side, but variety, within bounds, is a good thing, aided by their billing position. Another one to keep an eye on.
The real draw for true believers of the Scottish scene, though, is a rare appearance from Fuath; a proper treat to round out the evening.
Sharing a frontman (and other personnel) with Saor, you might think you know what you’re getting, but you would be slightly off base. It is naturally difficult not to compare. However, this is a more bestial take on black metal than a folk soaked one. It may even possibly be considered more black metal, in some people’s book. Despite being a bit more stapled to the original idioms of the scene than their partner project, they do still manage to delight, with surprising moments of ingenuity. A rather engaging set ensues, with some monolithic chorus moments and dour hooks.
It’s great seeing Mr Marshall a bit more up close and personal than we’re used to, and throwing down a slightly more aggressive attack. The general agreement in house is that we were right to make the effort, and will endeavour to do so again. Couldn’t have ended the weekend better!
