U.S. black metal outfit Sev Lezu have no interest in easing anyone in – just as Beelzebub intended!

Formed in 2022, Sev Lezu have taken their time reaching their debut, but Blood Conscript proves it was worth the wait. Theres trepidation as opener Into Darkness begins; a short, instrumental track that is equal parts eerie and tantalising. In contradiction, The Stillborn lurches forth into a wintery flurry and you’re immediately caught off balance. Detonating into a vicious hybrid of black metal frost and death-metal weight, this ferocious squall refuses to relent.

 The band describe themselves with an air of complexity;

“Sonic malignancy rooted in the sounds of old, with musicality drawing from the frigid majesty of the Swedish tradition (à la Dissection, Bathory) and Finnish institutions Sargeist, Horna, and Satanic Warmaster, all channelled through the grinding rhythmic violence of Terrorizer and Nasum, the warhorse charge of Iron Maiden, and the sharpness and percussive dynamism of Death’s final records.”

Although this reads as a blatant invitation to give the album a spin, a single hook in the Gulf of Bothnia, so to speak, there really is a little of everything here. The influences may vary in prominence, but there is more than enough muscle, intent and conviction to push Blood Conscript well beyond mere revivalism. Sev Lezu wear their influences openly yet somehow manage to blend them into something that feels distinctly their own, and, remarkably, it works.

That sense of purpose carries through to the record’s production. Recorded, mixed and mastered at Artifact Audio by drummer, vocalist, lyricist and producer Sasha Stroud (Belexum, Onw), Blood Conscript possesses a raw-edged clarity that gives each element room to bite.

 The guitars hack through its bloodied, darkened tales, the drums ensanguine revenge, and the bass penetrates the storm.

Guitarist Melissa Moore (Crossspitter, Sonja) moves fluidly between Dissection-like grandeur, serrated Finnish black metal and charging heavy-metal melody, while bassist FW (Manat) provides the faster passages with a grim, grinding backbone.

That balance is already evident on Corpse Step, featuring guest guitar and songwriting from Mia Priest (ex-Impiety), an early standout that marries a memorable hook to the record’s uglier rhythmic instincts. The title track takes a more direct approach, propelled by a warhorse gallop and a chorus-sized central motif without sacrificing any of its hostility. Elsewhere, The Ritual of Bone and Blade plunges further into the album’s ancient, blood-soaked mythology, before Man’s Evil Gift brings the set to a suitably bitter close.

Blood Conscript rarely offers room to breathe, but there is purpose behind every attack. It is that conviction that ultimately makes the album standalone.
