Black Door follow up their 2022 debut, And the Spirit of Old Whispered Words of Amduat, with In the Shadows of a Funerary Gleam, a nine-track album built around black metal’s darker and more atmospheric traditions. Black Door is a single artist entity, begotten by the mighty Vestibulum, the newest incarnation of the Dutch-born, multifaceted, Robbert van Rumund. Drawing heavily on nocturnal histrionics – funerary, vampiric and the occult – Vestibulum’s lyrical themes are executed with antiquated mythology, confronting mortality, and cosmic resignation rather than relying on mere tantalising theatricality.

“Black Door refuses to be confined by simple nostalgia. Beneath its veil of blackened melancholy lies a flame that illuminates both as a beacon and warning; a fading light that guides the listener through stale humid mists, crepuscular awakenings, lamentations of dying ages, and confrontations with powers older than mankind itself.”

Mixed by G.M. and mastered by William Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios, there is a clear musician-to-musician understanding at play. Killingsworth’s own multi-instrumental background permits him to recognise the nuances of Vestibulum’s polygonal performance and ensure that each instrument cuts through with definition without stripping away its weight, particularly with Entrancement in Dusk, Quintessence of Nightfall.

Wolves of Hades positions the record as a progression from Black Door’s debut rather than a simple exercise in retro nostalgia, yet the whispers from the woods point further afield, referencing Lamp of Murmuur, Devil Master, Spectral Wound and Ebony Pendant as kindred spirits.

Closing track Forged by Promethean Fire arrives as the album’s first single and its longest composition, a fittingly bleak and drawn-out finale. Where Prometheus brought fire to mankind, Vestibulum instead leaves us with the dying embers of something far more desolate.

Perhaps that is the true nature of In the Shadows of a Funerary Gleam: not a celebration of darkness, but a confrontation with what remains when the light begins to fail. From its sepulchral opening to its final embers, Vestibulum carries the listener through wraiths, primordial powers and dying ages, leaving behind neither salvation nor resolution.
