Perthshire band, The Goatboy, have been peddling grunge for quite some time now. Certainly long before the recent resurgence of the genre. Why grunge, though? What is the enduring appeal?

Founding member, Stef Bednarek, clears it up: “It’s always been grunge since the first time I heard Nevermind as a 12 year old.

I went from a techno head to a grunge rocker in an instant, Nirvana was the link to the alternative rock scene that was needed , they turned you on to bands like Sonic Youth, the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr, and Mudhoney. Listen to any of those bands records from 88-94, and watch their videos; you will hear the music has aged well, and the videos still look cool as fuck.

The band has recently undergone, not just a lineup change, but a reshuffling of their personnel. Again, this reflects the genre’s attitude to musicianship.

Since Grant (our original drummer) left around 4 years ago,” Stef continues, “we had a couple of drummers in that didn’t quite fit the bill.

I then decided to go back behind the kit (I’m originally a drummer). Although I enjoyed it, I feel we lost the connection with the crowd in our live shows. We put the position out there, and lucky for us, Don got in touch. He’s a great man on the sticks, and has fitted in perfectly, and brings a real power to the live set.

The rewards of staying true to their musical passion are coming through as well. For example, three times they’ve been invited to perform at Glasgow’s Grunge Fest.

Stef elaborates: “1st time was at The Classic Grand, absolutely mobbed!

“I saw a band there called Gods Zoo, who I still enjoy to this day. The second one was at Ivory Blacks, where the stand out band was Metatone. Still good friends. There was a great Alice In Chain’s tribute band called Angry Hair. We finished our set with a cover of Sliver by Nirvana. That got a great reaction, and we were asked to come back the next year, and do a set of Nirvana covers at the following year’s event, and that one sold out, and was absolutely amazing! The guys from Sounds of Seattle records put on the gig, and have always been very supportive of The Goatboy, which we really appreciate. Colin from SOS records has a great grunge tribute band called The Lost Dogs. Well worth checking out!!!”

The band close with this promise for the future:

Now we have a settled line up with Don on drums and Stef back out front (after 2 and a half years on drums n vocals), we plan on writing some new grunge face melters; a new ep before the end of the year, and playing live as much as possible!
