Man Made Origin have been on the go, in various swells and troughs of activity, for almost 18 years, now. We finally saw new music from them in the single Maritime, in 2025 – their first in nearly a decade.

We love our concept albums and having our music tell a story.” they begin.

State of Nature (2009) was set in a post-nuclear apocalypse, False Consciousness (2011) captures an alternative sci-fi history, where the Roman Empire has continued into the far future, and The Divine Soulless (2016) is set during the First Crusade. Maritime and the other new songs take place during the height of the European age of empires and centre on how imagination, adventure and ambition sit uneasily with greed, cruelty and exploitation. Maritime is the track which is designed to encompass all of that – a bit like the title credits – whilst the others follow a specific story in this setting. It maintains our signature sound while presenting our ideas with greater focus and clarity, A bit more restrained, allowing the weight, atmosphere, and emotion to hit harder and stay with you, longer.

Why, though, was there such an ocean of time between materials? What were the trials and tribulations on that journey?

After The Divine Soulless we jumped straight into new material, but the band was scattering: DC and Scot stayed in Dundee, I (Max) was studying (and now living) in England, and Andy moved toward Perth. Between the distance, the pandemic, and new family members, our regular process became impossible, so we switched to exchanging ideas digitally. It took years to find a solid footing and direction, but working apart forced us to be more intentional in our songwriting and cherish the rare moments we could finally rehearse together. I remember DC, Scot and I showing our drummer Andy the original elaborate ideas for Maritime; he shredded it to pieces, picked up one of the shards, and said, “bin the rest, let’s centre on this one bit and build a song around it”.”

At the mention of more output in the Maritime vein, we obviously had to ask; what’s the story of the music, the message, and when does it land..?

We recorded another 3 songs in July/August 2025 with Scott McLean (Ashenspire, healthyliving), who produced Maritime and The Divine Soulless.” they comment.

We went deep into the recording process, taking the time to follow the rabbit hole of creativity on the songs; crafting and nerding-out on tones and percussion and all manner of sounds. We are immensely proud of these recordings and so excited to share more with you. Coupled with Maritime, they will make up an EP, which will centre on a journey into the unknown and the ultimate downfall of greed. We were playing the song Steaming Shores live in 2025 and we’ll be debuting another new one – A Storm Surrounds Us – at the Metal 2 the Masses Dundee Heat.

In closing, they add: “We’re still planning the specifics of the release, but we’re giddy to let everyone hear what we’ve done. It’s been a long time coming. And who knows, maybe this EP has a part II already in the works…
