Forked Tongues: Segadeth Interview 2025

Scottish video game based metal band, Segadeth are out to push some buttons.

They started 2025 by welcoming their new bassist, Naomi Rose. The band have since been rocking the convention circuit UK wide at Anime and Gaming Conventions, with the next at Glasgow Anime and Gaming Convention 5-6th July. A busy schedule for a band who share members with A Murder of Crows, Ornum, and Temptation Waits. Just before they headline the first Mosh Monthly at Hidden, we hit the pause button for a rapid fire round of questions. Naturally, we had to kick off with the most metal and seriously probing inquiry…

What is the best video game and why?

Neale:Final Fantasy 7! It has a gripping story with a powerful message about saving the environment, scored with an incredible soundtrack by the legendary Nobuo Uetmatsu.”

Stu E: “I’d say the best video game is the original Megaman X. The sound track is terrific, you learn to play it without the game holding your hand. Its challenging, and you can unlock the Haduken!

Stooo M: “The best video game of all time is Mario 64. So far ahead of its time and although the Switch version is fiddly to play, if you go back and play it on N64, it still controls brilliantly with the original controller.”

Naomi:Crash Bandicoot 2 is my favourite game. The movement tech is incredibly satisfying to pull off and destroying all the boxes is addicting.”

Scott: “Fallout 1/2 . They’re jank as all hell . but as writing , world building and character design go they’re  a masterclass in using what was there and forging a legacy.  That or Enter the Gungeon … tight af gameplay loop and just chock to the brim with pop culture references.

You have been playing a lot of gaming conventions. How did that come about?

Neale: “We’ve been in touch with many cons over the years looking for shows. Some of our first gigs were for Press Start Gaming in Dundee.  Anime League were the first con to get in touch with us directly to play Glasgow Anime and Gaming Con last year. We’ve since played more of their events and are returning to Glasgow Anime and Gaming Con on 6th July 2025.”

How do these shows compare to playing metal shows?

These are really great events for the whole family and we tend to hang out at the Conventions and enjoy the full day, although we are one of many, many attractions they have with all the stalls, games, anime screenings, cosplay competitions etc. With metal shows we get a more intimate and raucous crowd who we can power up and energise from!

You’ve recently recruited new members to your ranks. What can you tell us about bringing that together? What is the history of your new lineup?

We used to wear T-shirts on stage with RockBand/Guitar hero controller colours on stage and the our bassist have always worn orange, so we call it the Curse of the Orange shirt that we go through so many bassist! Naomi Rose auditioned for us last December as our third bassist and has brought such a level of talent to the band that the rest of us are now trying to up our game and git good.  Naomi also plays guitar and sings in Ornum so is part of the “2-Band Club” alongside Neale (A Murder of Crows) and Stooo Marshall (Temptation Waits).

If you could be the sole creators of the soundtrack for one video game, which one would you choose..? And what would you do with it?

Scott: “I’d pick Metal Gear Solid 3 and make it all punk ska!

Stooo M: “Metal remake of the Outrun soundtrack!

Stu E: “I’d want to remaster the sound track from A Link To The Past. The soundtrack is great already, but would be even more so with screaming guitars, gut punching drums, slap bass, and synth that makes you picture neon lights.

Naomi: “I’d like to create music for The Last of Us. It would be interesting to write ambient and emotional guitar to fit the game’s atmosphere.”

Neale:  “I’d like to score an R-Type / Gradius type shmup with some high octane, melodic synth/math rock, or maybe metal up the soundtrack to Digger T. ROCK!

What is next for Segadeth? Can we expect an album any time soon?

We have an ever evolving, constantly revolving setlist so we’re always learning new things.  We do have plans to record and work towards an album, as we have a lot of material,  but being a cover band we expect to pay a LOT of licencing fees (or get hit with a cease and desist from Nintendo!)  In the meantime we’re getting out and gigging where we can.
