Dragon Fire: Rotting Christ – Aealo (single)
War, tragedy, and spirit reawakened: Aealo rises again
Rotting Christ are back with a thunderous reminder of why they still reign over Hellenic black metal. The band have just unleashed their title track as a teaser announcement to the freshly re-recorded edition of pivotal 2010 album Aealo. The new version of the full-length arrives 23rd January,, on Season of Mist.Pre-order it here:

Since 1987, the band have defined and evolved the genre with a sound that unites extremity, ancient heritage, and ritualistic atmosphere.
Aealo marked a decisive moment in that creative journey, and this renewed edition brings the album’s epic vision into sharp, cinematic focus. But what is different this time around?
“Aealo emerges more cinematic than ever: female lamentation choirs, martial percussion, folkloric melodies, and commanding riff-work collide in a sweeping vision of war, tragedy, and pagan spirituality.”
And with special guest contributions from avant-garde, soprano sfogato legend Diamanda Galás and personal favourite, Primordial’s Alan A. Nemtheanga, further elevate the record’s mythic scale.
A few guesties, modern production, revamped artwork, and a mix that hits like a ritual war drum – but what makes this edition of Aealo nothing more than a die-hard fan must have?
For me, this track has certainly got me intrigued – it’s cranked a bit higher – and I can’t wait to hear the full album in what is undoubtably a crisper and greater immersive odyssey. Yet perhaps intentionally more prolifically, Rotting Christ’s timely revisit draws reflection on the band’s earlier sweeping exploration of war, tragedy, and pagan spirituality to a world where this devastatingly remains so prevalent. Aealo remains an unprecedented power.
Richer, fiercer, and more sonically expansive, the new Aealo amplifies every element that has made the album a modern cornerstone. Rotting Christ doesn’t just honour the past; they’re supercharging it. For devoted and newcomers alike, this isn’t just essential listening – it’s a visceral reminder of why Rotting Christ continue to shape the very foundations of extreme metal.
